Zeal Motor’s new 2.8P Fat Truck pickup
There are easy sites, then there are swampy, muddy, steep, swampy, dangerous, or snow and ice covered sites. For the former, 4-wheel drive and differential locks are generally sufficient. For the rest, you may need a Fat Truck.
We first reported on the 2.8C Fat Truck in 2019. Now the company has released an upgraded amphibious version with pickup truck capabilities. The new 2.8P Fat Truck pickup from Canadian firm Zeal Motor is designed to transport people, equipment and tools to the job site in almost all conditions.
“Some companies have both personnel and equipment to move,” said Michele Ashton, Zeal Motor sales manager, speaking to Equipment world at the Utility Expo. “It is also priced lower, with the 2.8P model priced at around $ 120,000, while the 2.8C costs over $ 140,000.”
The Fat Truck pickup truck model is designed for utility contractors. It can be fitted with a variety of options including a high speed capstan, vegetation control spray unit, water tank, fire foam kit and a small service crane for recovery of equipment and materials after heavy rains or storms.
âIt has the same bottom, same engines, same engine, hydraulics and hydrostatic transmission as our other model, but the frame is different,â says Ashton. Additional options include front winch and rear hitch, roof rack, rear ladder, rear ROPS, electronic inclinometer, tow package, storage box, tow package, haul trailer and additional battery. The company is also working with Provectus Robotics to offer a stand-alone version.
The 2.8P Fat Truck has a payload capacity of 2,200 pounds and can travel up to 25 mph on land and 3 mph on water. If you face seemingly impossible hills, the truck can go up and down slopes on inclines of 70% and traverse inclines as steep as 40%.
With its large, high traction tires, the Fat Truck’s footprint is only 1.6 psi – five times less than the weight exerted by a human footprint. In addition to excellent flotation, the low impact tires roll lightly over sensitive vegetation and will not crush roots around the drip line of trees that customers may wish to preserve.
As for the dimensions, the Fat Truck 2.8P lives up to its name at 103 inches tall, 146.5 inches long and 100 inches wide with a ground clearance of 20.7 inches. It weighs 4,900 pounds.
An automatic tire inflation system ensures optimum inflation for the terrain and the load.
The truck runs on a four-cylinder Caterpillar C2.2 turbodiesel that develops 67 horsepower and 153 pounds of torque. The fuel tank holds 18.5 gallons. Braking is provided by a hydrostatic transmission with positive deceleration. For added safety, the brakes automatically engage whenever you are not moving.
