SEforALL and Google launch a new pact to decarbonise electricity on a global scale
VIENNA, August 24, 2021 / PRNewswire / – A carbon-free electricity sector is the foundation for achieving a net zero global economy. Electricity generates 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is essential for the decarbonization of other sectors of the economy, including buildings, transport and industry. To achieve net zero emissions in the global economy by 2050, electricity must become the heart of the energy system and be carbon-free even faster, while growing to meet the growing demands of millions of people who do not have adequate access to electricity today.
Google is building on its three-decade commitment to sustainability for people and the planet by aiming to operate on carbon-free energy – every hour of every day, in all of its data centers and office campuses across the world, by 2030. Plus an ambitious commitment will be enshrined in an energy pact, an innovation introduced by SEforALL and supported by UN-Energy as a key outcome of the next United Nations high-level dialogue on energy in September . Energy pacts are public and traceable commitments, with specific actions, made by governments, businesses and others to achieve energy transition goals by 2030 – including universal access to affordable and clean energy .
Google and SEforALL will leverage Google’s experience to create a 24/7 global compact Carbon-Free energy (CFE). Google and SEforAll are calling on businesses, governments and other stakeholders who pledge to abide by the 24/7 principles of the CFE to join the Compact and work together to implement the essential policies to fully decarbonise people. electrical systems of the world.
“We look forward to working with Sustainable Energy for All and governments and businesses around the world to completely decarbonize grids and support a carbon-free economy. With this Global Compact, we have a unique opportunity to transform energy policies, technologies and procurement practices. but only if we work together. “mentioned Kate brandt, director of sustainable development at Google.
“This partnership with Google sends a powerful signal that none of us can single-handedly reach the scale necessary to tackle the dual crisis of climate and energy poverty. Which may pave the way for others to to follow.” noted Damilola Ogunbiyi, CEO and Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Sustainable Energy for All.
Google and SEforALL recognize the need for urgent action now. This is punctuated by the disturbing new IPCC report on climate change showing that we need to radically transform our energy systems to run on carbon-free energy in order to avoid warming the planet beyond the global target of 1.5. degrees Celsius. Achieving this will require a rapid acceleration in the pace of clean energy deployment, the development of advanced carbon-free energy technologies, and significant policy changes. All stakeholders – from energy consumers and energy providers to policymakers and civil society – must work to advance the decarbonization of global power systems in a fair and equitable manner. This is why a global coalition is more than ever necessary.
To act on this urgent problem, Google and SEforALL are co-organizing a workshop on 24/7 carbon-free energy as a path to net-zero Tuesday August 24 at 11:00 am EST, to demonstrate the concept and how energy consumers around the world can support the decarbonization of electricity, which means that every kilowatt hour of electricity demand is served by carbon-free sources of electricity, every hour of every day, everywhere. The workshop will also provide an overview of energy pacts and show how participants themselves can create and commit to one.
You can register for the virtual workshop on 24/7 carbon-free energy as a path to net-zero will take place on Tuesday 24 August at 11:00 am EST here.
