Scottish election 2021: Albas Alex Salmond claims independent Scotland should be debt free

The former first minister said Alba’s position was that the country should not pay any share of the national debt after separating from the union.
This is in contrast to when he led the SNP government during the 2014 vote which said Scotland would agree to settle part of the debt.
Speaking to the Daily Record, he said: “The negotiating position of Scotland should, in Alba’s opinion, be a clean settlement.
“These are not debts and not shared assets of international assets that we are talking about.”
He added, “You would start with a zero credit position.”
The newspaper reports that Mr Salmond said the previous position was based on monetary union with the rest of the UK.
The new directive comes because UK parties have ruled out this option.
