New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet has appointed new Liberal Upper House MP Peter Poulos as Parliamentary Secretary for Wollongong and Illawarra – a vacancy for almost two years. In this role, Mr Poulos will be responsible for liaising with NSW government ministers on issues specific to Illawarra, as well as advocating for the region as a whole. Although a native of Rockdale, Mr Poulos is no stranger to Illawarra, having spent nearly a decade working as an employee in the Wollongong office of Federal Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, and says he ‘he’s keen to get started. New South Wales Premier Dominic Perrottet has appointed new Liberal Upper House MP Peter Poulos as Parliamentary Secretary for Wollongong and Illawarra – a vacancy for almost two years.
In this role, Mr Poulos will be responsible for liaising with NSW government ministers on issues specific to Illawarra, as well as advocating for the region as a whole.
Although a native of Rockdale, Mr Poulos is no stranger to Illawarra, having spent nearly a decade working as an employee in the Wollongong office of Federal Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, and says he ‘he’s eager to get started.
âI see Illawarra as a huge think tank that promotes ideas, and my role is to help nurture those ideas and bring them to government,â he said.

When asked what his priorities are for the region – and which ministers could be among the first to visit soon – Mr Poulos cited the Prime Minister’s announcement earlier this month that his government would establish a new cities ministry , focused on realizing the expanded vision of the Greater Sydney Commission 2017 to include Wollongong, Newcastle and the Central Coast.
Former Transport Minister Rob Stokes has been appointed to oversee the new portfolio, which Mr Poulos said made it clear to taxpayers that Wollongong was a priority area for the new prime minister.
“My role will be to do all I can to dialogue with the new Minister of Cities and get him to connect with the region to unleash its potential,” Poulos said.
Illawarra’s last parliamentary secretary was former Liberal MP for Kiama-turned-independent Gareth Ward, who held the post from April 2015 to March 2019.
