“All of a sudden, flash floods hit and people were washed away. So far eight bodies have been found and we have rescued about 50 people,” Jalpaiguri District Magistrate Moumita told PTI. Godara.
She said 13 people, who suffered minor injuries, were admitted to a nearby hospital.
“Search and rescue operations are ongoing and carried out by teams from NDRF, SDRF, police and local government. Search operations have started downstream,” she said. .
The state’s backward class social welfare minister, Bulu Chik Baraik, who is the MP for Mal Assembly constituency, feared the death toll would rise.
“I was present at the scene when the incident happened. Several people were swept away and the water current was very strong. Hundreds of people were present when the incident happened. Several are still missing,” he said.
Baraik and senior TMC leaders rushed to the scene to oversee rescue and rescue operations.
Opposition Leader in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari has called on the state administration to step up rescue efforts.
