Government allows retroactive fitment of CNG kit to replace diesel engines in BS-VI vehicles

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed to allow modification via CNG kit upgrade and replacement of diesel engines with CNG engines, in the case of BS-VI vehicles under 3.5 tonnes .
The proposal came to void draft notification dated 27th January 2022. From now on the retrofitting of CNG and LPG kits is permitted in motor vehicles under BS-IV emission standards.
The notification defines the type approval requirements for the retrofit equipment. CNG is an environmentally friendly fuel and will reduce the emission levels of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particulates and smoke, compared to petrol and diesel engines.
The proposal was formulated in consultation with stakeholders, the ministry said in a statement.
Comments and suggestions were solicited from relevant stakeholders within thirty days, he added.

India is actively pushing for alternatives to replace fossil fuel vehicles in the country. After months of waiting, Delhi got its first of 300 electric buses on offer with features suitable for women and people with disabilities on January 17.
“Happy to share that Hon. CM @ArvindKejriwal will be reporting 1st electric bus on Delhi roads today at 12 noon from DTC IP Depot,” Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot tweeted this morning.

According to the Delhi government, as the name suggests, these buses will be environmentally friendly as they will emit zero percent smoke and run entirely on electricity. These 12-meter low-floor electric buses will be equipped with CCTV cameras, activated panic buttons to ensure women’s safety as well as pink seats. In addition to having GPS and live tracking, these buses will have access ramps for people with disabilities.
“The first prototype of the electric bus has already reached Delhi and will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday January 17. Fifty electric buses will be added to DTC’s fleet by the second week of February and the goal of admitting 300 electric buses is expected to be achieved through April,” Gahlot said Friday at the inauguration of 100 new buses. As well as being suitable for people with reduced mobility, the new CNG AC low-floor buses, launched on January 14, are fully compliant with BS-VI emission standards and are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as a real-time passenger information. system, CCTV, panic buttons and GPS, among others.
The introduction of these 100 buses took the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) fleet to an all-time high of 6,900. Prior to this, Delhi had seen 6,000 buses in the Delhi Transport Department’s fleet during the Commonwealth Games , Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Friday. By November, the Delhi cabinet had approved the induction of 190 low-floor AC CNG buses – 100 of which have already been launched, under its cluster programme.
The Cabinet had further said that 300 electric buses would also be added to the DTC fleet by the start of 2022 – a target which should be achieved in April.
