The targeting and beyond-line-of-sight communications provided by the transport layer will equip tactical warfighters around the world with resilient connectivity to other space assets. While the initial Slice 0 constellation is expected to have limited network capacity, future Slice 1 enhancements and beyond will dramatically increase data routing across a larger space vehicle network. Tranche 1 will then serve as the backbone for joint command and control of all domains – greatly expanding the United States’ global defense capabilities. Terran Orbital previously announced the award of a contract to Lockheed Martin to build 42 Tranche 1 satellites.
SDA Director Dr. Derek Tournear was on hand for the visit along with Johnathon Caldwell, vice president and general manager of military space at Lockheed Martin Space.
“It has been an absolute honor to welcome Lockheed Martin and SDA to Terran Orbital’s recently expanded, state-of-the-art facilities,” said Terran Orbital Co-Founder, President and CEO, Marc Bell. “Terran Orbital will continue to grow rapidly its production capacity precisely for those times when we are called upon to develop the satellites and technology used to defend our nation and our allies. Terran Orbital looks forward to designing, building and delivering the remaining nine Tranche 0 buses and 42 Tranche 1 buses.”
In addition to the transport layer satellites, Terran Orbital previously announced the award of a contract to build and support three microsatellite-class satellites for Lockheed Martin.
